Description

December 12, 1971: President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta delights a huge crowd in Nairobi’s Jamhuri Park at the rally to mark the eighth anniversary of independence when he appeared for the first time in his life in the full ceremonial uniform of Commander-in-Chief of Kenya’s armed forces. As a brisk, proud, devoted and determined soldier Mzee Kenyatta ushered Kenya into the ninth year of independence with a call to wananchi for unity, courage and hard work to help to develop Kenya. Addressing the Nation in Kiswahili and English the President said that progress so far achieved by Kenyans since Independence was a clear indication to the rest of the world that Africans could govern themselves and develop the nation on their own. Seen here with First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta.
