Description

September 22, 1993: Former Nakuru North MP Koigi wa Wamwere (in cap) and six other people including a woman, declined to plead when charged before a packed Nakuru court with a variety of security offences. Armed police guarded the courthouse and large crowds gathered outside before and during the hearing. Many had been waiting for the appearance of the accused for two days. There were no incidents. The charges included entering a prohibited area without authority and being in possession of firearms, ammunition and seditious pamphlets. Mr. Paul Muite, a defence counsel, said his clients did not wish to plead since the charges were defective. He also claimed some of the defendants had been whipped by police. The court adjourned the case until tomorrow to rule on the pleading and other issues and ordered medical examinations for some of the accused.
